Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American actress and singer her career spans more than 40 years. London was a torch-singer who was known for her soft, smooth vocals. She recorded more than 30 albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, she recorded "Cry Me a River" the track she introduced to her debut album. In addition to her music-related recognition, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her performance as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her career as an actress. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 with roles in movies. This included roles as the lead female character in a variety of westerns. She also starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording deal with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional musical career. In 1969, she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be part of the emergency series as Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) The show was joined by her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
